Undoubtedly, the craze for engineering and medical courses was at its peak when students, especially of science background, had limited options in other streams/courses of such repute. Needless to say about, the day a student clears the medical or engineering entrance, he is elevated to the status of an honourable entity in the society, because these two courses bring honour to a student and his/her family besides offering a lucrative career option.

However, the scenario has changed now. Though a number of people still like to go for medical and engineering, these two disciplines have reached their saturation point. This has prompted many students to look for other academic avenues that can satisfy their creative spirit while also offering great career prospects in future.
 They rather opt for numerous other reputed courses which also have wide scope and have been proven to be lucrative career options. Today, there are a large number of career options for a student after qualifying XII with a PCM or a PCB combination. Apart from enabling you to attempt the Medical or Engineering entrance exams, having a science background also provides you an edge over others because you can change your stream anytime you want. You can choose your favourite subjects and opt for any course you want.



Engineering is one of the sought after career by science students. Graduate course is of the four years. Following are degree courses in various branches of engineering

• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Science
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Tele-communication
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engg.
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Information Technology
• B.Technology/Bachelor of Engineering in Dairy Technology
Other specializations include marine, aerospace, agricultural, Petroleum, Automobile, Biochemical, Bio Medical, Biotechnology, Bio Instrumentation, Bio Informatics, Chemical, Environmental, Food technology, Fire, Leather, Mining & Metallurgical, Nano technology, Printing, Plastic & polymer, Rubber, Genetic, Textile etc.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with high percentile.
Admission procedure: National Level entrance test such as IIT-JEE, GATE, UPSEE, BITSAT and State level or entrance test.

Bachelor of Architecture (B. Arch) – Five years course.
A 5-year course, Bachelor of Architecture is a branch that deals with planning and construction of buildings, commercial structures, public utility structures and so forth. An Architecture graduate can be absorbed in MNCs and leading players that operate in the construction sector. In this field, you can become Chief Architect, Assistant Architect, Resource Manager, Planning and Design professional, Consultant etc. A fresher in this field can earn Rs.15,000 per month; after 4 to 5 years of experience, the salary may go up to Rs.60-80,000 or even above this figure.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with high percentile
Admission Procedure: National Level entrance test such as IIT-JEE, GATE, UPSEE, BITSAT and State level or entrance test.

Higher National Diploma  (HND) Nautical Science or Marine Engineering (1 year course).
Bachelor of Science in Nautical Technology  (3 years training at Institute + 1 year at Sea).
Bachelor of Technology in Naval Architecture and Ship Building.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with high percentile.
Admission procedure: The All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) , required the vision (eyesight) and health standards.

Commercial pilot training from Aviation Institutes in India.
BSc in Aviation Sciences.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with high percentile.
Admission procedure: Admission is based on an all-India written test, Pilot Aptitude Test (WOMBAT) and an interview. Required good eyesight and  health.

BSc in physics, chemistry, maths, astronomy, forensic Science, geology, statistics , industrial chemistry, nautical science, home science, nutrition, clothing and textile, extension and communication, environmental science, Human Development and Family studies (BSc),  fashion design, fashion technology etc.
• B.Sc. Animation and Multimedia
Today, it has evolved into a very popular career option in India. Filmmakers and animation companies are investing profusely into this sector. Starting monthly salary for an Animation & Multimedia graduate fluctuates from Rs.15,000 to 20,000 which continues to be on rise with individual’s experience and standard of the companies.  
• B.Sc. Aviation
• B.Sc. Electronics and Communication
An Electronics and Communication graduate has a plethora of opportunities in such sectors as Civil Aviation, Indian Telephone Industries, Telegraph Department, Railways, DRDO, Telecommunication, and various other sectors. The initial salary for a fresh employee starts from Rs. 10,000 which increases according to performance and seniority.
• B.Sc. Nautical Science
 B.Sc. Biotechnology
This is a combination of both Engineering and Biology subjects. There is a world of opportunities after the completion of this course. As predicted by the surveys and projections, the employment potential in the biotechnology sector is all set to boom in coming years with creation of lakhs of jobs in the biotech sector. A biotechnology graduate can anticipate an average monthly salary of Rs.20,000 in a typical pharmaceutical firm. 
Apart from the ones listed above, you can also opt for any of the other B.Sc courses listed below which have tremendous potential to become a lucrative career option.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with minimum 55 %percentile
Admission procedure: Merit based admission, few institutes conduct entrance exam.

The NDA offers only a full-time, residential undergraduate program. Cadets are awarded a Baccalaureate degree (a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science or a Bachelor of Technology) after 3 years of study. Cadets have a choice of two streams of study. The Science stream offers studies in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Computer Science. The Humanities (Liberal Arts) stream offers studies in History, Economics, Political Science, Geography and Language.
Eligibility: 12ths PCM, unmarried Indian citizens.
Admission procedure: National level NDA exam.

The selected candidates get trained for four years, not just in the field of mechanical and electrical engineering; they are also groomed to take up leadership positions in the Indian Railways as Class 1 officers.
Eligibility: 12th Science PCM with first class
Admission Procedure: All India Special Railway Apprentice Exam by UPSC.

8. Business Administration and Management Studies

Bachelor of Business Administration has no relevance with science stream. However, science stream students can pursue this 3-year course. After its completion, one may pursue M.B.A. (Master of Business Administration) which is a two-year masters degree programme. Mostly, job opportunities are in private sector. With seniority and performance, a B.B.A. graduate can be promoted to managerial posts. The job profiles that a graduate holding a B.B.A. degree can opt for include HR Management, Material Management, Administrative roles etc. In the beginning, some government organisations pay a B.B.A. degree holder around Rs.15,000 per month. After 4-5 years of experience, the monthly salary may rise to Rs.20,000 to 25,000. In private sector, it depends upon the employment.

Eligibility: 12th Science/Commerce/Arts with minimum 55% 
Admission Procedure: Admission to BA courses is based on merit. Admission to other courses is based on entrance exam or interview.


It is a 3-year academic program leading to a B.Sc. degree. It has a practical approach-based curriculum which includes fashion shows, advanced study of sketching and designs that starts from sketching and cutting on paper, seminars and regular interactions with celebrities from the Fashion Industry. There is wide scope starting with the basics and ends with an all-encompassing outlook of the abundant career opportunities available in this industry. A monthly salary/income of a fashion designer starts from around Rs.30,000 and may go to whopping in lakhs also.

If you could not get into medical or engineering streams of degree courses, you can proceed for admission in Diploma Engineering in a variety of disciplines. Thus, after the completion of your diploma, you can go for a degree. However, apart from the traditional Diploma Engineering programs, you may opt for numerous other job-oriented diploma courses also. As far as the duration of the course is concerned, some may last for a few months while some may take more than a year.
